Google Ads for plumbers

Drain cleaning does not pay for itself. Repipes do.

We manage Google Ads for plumbers. Plumbing has the widest ticket spread of any trade we run. A campaign that treats an $89 drain call and a $14,000 repipe as the same conversion will quietly optimize itself toward the cheap one, then report a falling cost per lead as success.

A falling cost per lead can mean you are losing money.

Smart Bidding finds whatever you told it to value. Tell it every lead is equal and it will buy the cheapest one available, which in plumbing is almost always the lowest-ticket job in the account. The metric improves. The revenue does not.

Three kinds of search, three kinds of budget

Plumbing demand does not arrive as one thing, and a single campaign cannot bid correctly for all of it.

Intent 01

Emergency

Burst pipe, no hot water, sewage backing up. Won on proximity and profile, reached far cheaper through Local Services Ads than through Search, and decided before a second tab opens.

Intent 02

Planned and high ticket

Repipe, water heater replacement, sewer line, water treatment. Researched over days, compared across contractors, and the reason a plumbing account should be on Search at all.

Intent 03

Commercial and property management

Recurring contract work with a long relationship behind it. Low volume, high value, and an auction most residential plumbers never enter.

The trap is that emergency intent looks like the best performer in every report, because it converts fastest and costs least per lead. It is also the smallest job. Separate them and the account starts telling you the truth.

The standing work, valued on what actually closes.

01

Conversion values off booked revenue

Every lead type carries the real number, taken from WhatConverts, not the platform. This is the change that moves a plumbing account more than any bid adjustment, and it is the one most accounts have never had.

02

Call tracking before anything else

Most plumbing leads are calls, and a call with no recording and no outcome is not data. Without it you are optimizing toward ring volume, which is how drain calls take over an account.

03

Service and geography negatives

Septic if you do not pump, well work if you do not drill, and every town you will not send a van to. Plumbing draws an unusually wide net of adjacent searches that are not your work.

04

Report by job type, not by campaign

A month with fewer leads and two repipes beat the month before it. A report that only shows lead count cannot say that, so ours does not only show lead count.

What drives the budget in a plumbing account.

A plumbing budget is not one number, because the trade is not one kind of job. These are the things that move it.

01

Your metro and the season

How many plumbers bid on the same searches sets the price of a click. Cold snaps and heavy rain push emergency demand up fast, right when the auction is most crowded.

02

How wide your ticket spread runs

A shop that lives on drain calls needs far more volume than one that sells repipes and water heaters. The mix of jobs you want decides how much traffic is worth buying.

03

How many calls actually get answered

A call that rolls to voicemail is money gone. Answer rate and after-hours handling change what the same spend returns more than any bid setting.

04

Whether Local Services Ads takes the emergency work

Where Local Services Ads is available for your category, it can carry the urgent calls, so Search does not have to pay for them.

We price on booked work, not clicks, so there is no universal budget. Anyone who names a number before seeing your market and job mix is guessing. The free growth plan sizes it from your real auction.

How we build a plumbing account so each job gets its own bid.

One campaign cannot bid correctly for a drain call and a repipe. The structure is what lets the valuation work.

01

Campaigns split by intent and job type

Emergency, drain and sewer, water heaters, repipes and commercial each get their own budget and ads. A cheap job can no longer eat the money meant for a large one.

02

Location settings that match your vans

We target your service area and watch where searches come from, because location of interest pulls in people outside the towns you will drive to. Exclusions come from where calls actually originate.

03

Ad schedule that follows call handling

Emergency campaigns run when someone can pick up, whether that is your office, a dispatcher or an answering service. Planned work runs when homeowners compare quotes.

04

A landing page for each intent

A burst pipe needs a phone number and a promise to show up. A repipe researcher needs proof and a reason to trust you with the whole house.

Negative keyword themes for plumbers.

Plumbing pulls in an unusually wide net of searches that are not your work. These are the themes we block first.

01

Do-it-yourself and how-to

How to unclog a drain, replace a faucet or fix a running toilet. These come from people planning to do it themselves.

02

Parts, supplies and retail

Fittings, valves, pipe, tools, fixtures and big-box store names belong to shoppers, not callers.

03

Jobs, training and free work

Plumber jobs, apprenticeship, licensing classes, salary, and anything asking for free service. These bring applicants and bargain hunters.

The search terms report is read weekly. New junk shows up every week and costs money until it is blocked.

Local Services Ads or Search: which one catches which plumbing job.

Both belong in a plumbing account, because they catch different customers at different moments. We check availability for your category first.

LSA for the emergency, Search for everything with a bigger ticket.

That split is why Local Services Ads management sits next to Search in our plumbing builds. Google is also moving Local Services Ads into Google Ads, as its own help page explains, which makes the two easier to value on the same booked-job numbers. See plumbing marketing for the wider picture.

How the work runs

  1. 01 Separate by ticket Emergency, planned and commercial stop sharing a budget.
  2. 02 Wire the values Booked revenue per lead type, so bidding chases margin.
  3. 03 Move emergency to LSA Cheaper for the same call, and it frees Search budget.
  4. 04 Prune weekly Search terms, adjacent trades, and towns you do not serve.

What we track and report to you.

A plumbing report that only shows lead count hides the thing you care about. Here is what ours holds.

01

Calls by source, recorded

Every call is tracked to the campaign and search behind it, and recorded so we can hear whether it was a real job.

02

Qualified call, booked job, then revenue by job type

A call, a qualified lead, a booked job and the revenue it earned are four different things. A drain call and a repipe are never counted the same.

03

Search terms and impression share

We see how often you lost the auction to budget versus rank. Those are two different fixes.

04

Local Services Ads charged leads and credits

Where it runs, we track every charged lead and dispute the ones that qualify for a credit.

The account is reviewed weekly. You get a monthly report in plain language, with the call recordings and the dashboard behind it.

How long until you can judge it.

No honest agency can promise a date, so here is what has to happen first and in what order.

Stage 01

Clean and gather

We fix tracking, set up call recording, block junk and split campaigns by intent.

Stage 02

Bidding learns from booked jobs

Once booked revenue by job type flows back, bidding starts to favor the work that pays.

Stage 03

Judge on cost per booked job

Only then do we judge the account, on cost per booked job, not clicks or cost per lead.

Early numbers can look worse because we remove the cheap work that was flattering the report. The deal is month to month, so if it does not earn its keep, you can leave. See pricing.

What plumbing contractors ask

Q.01Why is our cost per lead fine but our revenue flat?

Almost always because every conversion is valued the same, so bidding has been optimizing toward your cheapest job type. The fix is conversion values from booked revenue. Cost per lead usually rises after we do it, and revenue rises faster.

Q.02Should we bid on drain cleaning at all?

Sometimes, as a deliberate loss leader with a plan for what happens next. If a drain call reliably turns into a camera inspection and a sewer line quote, it can pay. If it is a one-off $89 visit, you are buying revenue you do not want.

Q.03How do we stop paying for calls we do not service?

Geographic negatives and honest radius targeting, plus call tracking so we can see which towns the wasted calls come from. Location of interest matters as much as location of presence, and most accounts have only set one.

Q.04Do we need call tracking before we start?

Yes. Not as an upsell, as a precondition. Without call outcomes the account cannot learn which searches produce work rather than noise, and in a trade this ticket-spread wide that distinction is the whole game.

Q.05Is Local Services Ads enough on its own for a plumber?

For emergency work, often close to it. For repipes, water heaters and commercial, no. LSA cannot reach research intent, and research intent is where the large tickets are decided.

Q.06How long before Smart Bidding has enough data?

Roughly thirty conversions in thirty days per campaign before it is doing anything clever. Splitting a small account into six campaigns starves all six, which is why we split by ticket and not by keyword.

Q.07What happens if my phone goes to voicemail after hours?

You pay for the click and lose the job, because an emergency caller moves to the next plumber. We set the schedule around who actually answers, and you can route after-hours emergency calls to an answering service or a dispatcher so the spend is not wasted.

Q.08Should I bid on my own company name?

Usually yes, on a small budget. It protects your name from competitors and from lead-gen sites that bid on it. We track it separately so branded calls never get credited to your generic campaigns and make them look better than they are.

Q.09Why did my leads drop even though I am spending the same?

Common causes are a seasonal swing, a new competitor in the auction, a tracking break, or bidding that shifted after we changed what it values. We check impression share and the search terms first, then the phones, before touching the budget.
