Google Ads for electricians

One category is moving. The auction has not caught up.

We manage Google Ads for electricians. Panel upgrades and EV charger installations are growing faster than the bidding on them. That gap is temporary, and it is the best reason for an electrical contractor to be in Search this year rather than next.

Ad Rank rewards the incumbent. Right now that could be you.

Quality Score and account history compound, which means the cost of entering an auction rises as it fills. In most markets the EV and panel-upgrade auctions are still thin. Building history now is cheaper than buying it later, and this is the one trade where starting early is a cost argument rather than a patience argument.

Three kinds of search, three kinds of budget

Electrician demand does not arrive as one thing, and a single campaign cannot bid correctly for all of it.

Intent 01

Service calls

Outlet dead, breaker tripping, no power in half the house. Fast, local, decided on proximity, and reached far more cheaply through Local Services Ads than through Search.

Intent 02

The moving category

EV charger installation, panel upgrade, service upgrade to 200 amp, whole home generator. High ticket, rising demand, and an auction that in most markets is still not crowded.

Intent 03

Commercial and new construction

Long cycles, relationship led, won on reputation more than on a click. Search plays a support role here rather than a lead role.

The mistake is treating an electrical account as a service-call account with some upgrade work attached. Reverse it. Let Local Services Ads handle the service calls and point Search at the category that is growing.

The standing work, while the auction is still thin.

01

A campaign per upgrade category

EV charging, panel and service upgrades, and generators are different buyers with different objections. One campaign covering all three cannot bid correctly for any of them, and hides which one is actually growing in your market.

02

Account history treated as an asset

Quality Score and history are the cheapest competitive advantage available in a thin auction, and they only accrue while you are running. Pausing to save money here spends the thing that is hardest to buy back.

03

Negatives against handyman intent

Ceiling fan swaps, TV mounting, light bulb changes and the whole low-ticket adjacency. Google will match you to it happily, and it converts well enough to look like success.

04

License and permit language on the page

Panel and service upgrades are permitted work and homeowners know it. Saying so plainly on the landing page converts better than any bid change, and it screens out the callers looking for someone cheap and unlicensed.

What drives the budget for an electrical account.

Electrical spend does not move as one number, because the work behind it does not.

01

How crowded the upgrade auction is where you work

A metro where several contractors already chase EV chargers and panel upgrades costs more to compete in than a market where almost nobody is bidding yet. Storm weeks push emergency and generator searches up.

02

The spread between a small job and a big one

A ceiling fan swap and a service upgrade are both electrical work, and they are nowhere near the same job value. Budget has to be aimed at the high end.

03

Whether the phone gets answered

A click only becomes a job if someone picks up, qualifies the caller and books it. Missed calls are budget thrown away.

04

Whether Local Services Ads absorbs the emergency calls

Where Local Services Ads is available for your category, it can carry the dead-outlet and tripped-breaker calls. That frees Search budget for the growing work.

We price on booked work, and that is why we do not quote one universal number. Anyone who names a budget before looking at your market is guessing. See the pricing page for management plans.

How we structure an electrical account.

The split follows how homeowners search, not how an electrician thinks about the trade.

01

One campaign per upgrade category

EV charger installation, panel and service upgrades, and whole-home generators each get their own campaign, budget and ads. The account should show which category is actually earning.

02

Emergency and small service calls kept apart

Dead outlet and power-out searches are handled on their own, with an ad schedule and call handling that match when you really answer. If nobody can take a call at night, the ads should not pretend otherwise.

03

Location settings that match your license and route

We target the towns you serve and set the location option so the ads reach people physically in or searching for your area, not someone browsing from three counties away.

Negative keyword themes for electricians.

Electrical searches attract a lot of people who want to fix it themselves or want a different kind of help.

01

DIY and how-to searches

How to wire an outlet, how to replace a breaker, how to install a light switch. These searchers want instructions, not an invoice. We block the how-to, tutorial and video phrasing before it spends.

02

Parts and supplies

Searches for wire, breakers, conduit, panels as products, or for a specific fixture to buy. They want a store, not an electrician.

03

Jobs, training and licensing

Electrician jobs, apprenticeship, exam prep, license lookup and salary searches bring in job seekers and students. They click and never book.

The search terms report is read every week, and anything that slipped through becomes a negative before it spends again.

Local Services Ads or Search?

For electricians the honest answer is usually both, aimed at different customers.

Our Local Services Ads management covers the profile, reviews and disputing bad leads, and we check whether LSA is available for your category first. Google has also said it is moving LSA into Google Ads as Performance Max with pay-per-lead goals.

How the work runs

  1. 01 Split the categories EV, panel, generator and service stop sharing a campaign.
  2. 02 Move service calls to LSA Cheaper for the same call, and it frees Search budget.
  3. 03 Build history now A steady baseline while the upgrade auctions are still thin.
  4. 04 Cut handyman intent Weekly negatives against the low-ticket adjacency.

What we track and report.

You should be able to see which dollars turned into booked work, in words you can read.

01

Calls by source, recorded

Every call is tracked back to the campaign and keyword that produced it, and recorded so we can hear whether it was a real job.

02

Qualified call, booked job, then revenue

A call is not a job. We separate qualified calls from booked jobs and tie both to the type of work, so a charger install is not lumped in with a bulb change.

03

Search terms and lost impression share

We watch the real queries your ads matched, and whether you are missing impressions because of budget or because of rank, since the fixes are opposite.

04

LSA charged leads and credits

Where LSA is running, we review what was charged and file for credits on leads that qualify, per Google's lead credit rules.

The account is reviewed every week and reported monthly in plain language, with the changes we made and why.

How long until you can judge it.

Judge results on the right thing at the right stage, not on the first few days of clicks.

Stage 01

Clean up and gather data

The first weeks go to fixing structure, blocking junk searches and making sure every call and form is tracked correctly.

Stage 02

Bidding learns from booked jobs

Once real conversions flow, bidding has something to learn from. Google says LSA needs a learning period as its model adjusts,.

Stage 03

Judge on cost per booked job

Only then does cost per booked job mean something, and it is the number we hold ourselves to.

The upgrade auctions move slowly, so account history builds value over time. And because it is month to month, you can leave if it does not earn its keep.

What electrical contractors ask

Q.01Is EV charger work actually worth bidding on yet?

In most of the markets we run, yes, and the reason is the auction rather than the volume. The searches are fewer than panel upgrades but the competition is thinner still, so the cost per booked install is often better than it looks on volume alone.

Q.02Should we separate commercial from residential?

Always. The searches, the ticket sizes and the sales cycles have nothing in common, and mixing them means bidding is optimizing against an average that describes neither.

Q.03How do we avoid paying for handyman-level calls?

A negative list that is longer than you expect, and a landing page that leads with permitted, licensed work. The cheapest filter is telling the wrong caller they are in the wrong place before they dial.

Q.04Do we need Local Services Ads as well?

For service calls, it is usually the cheaper path by a wide margin. Search cannot reach a homeowner who is about to tap the first result on a map, and it charges a premium to try.

Q.05What is a realistic budget to test one category?

Enough to clear roughly thirty conversions in thirty days in that one campaign, or Smart Bidding never learns anything. That is a smaller number in a thin auction than in a crowded one, which is part of the argument for moving now.

Q.06Will the cheap auction last?

No. That is the point. Categories that are growing attract advertisers, and every month of account history you build while it is quiet is history a later entrant has to pay to catch up on.

Q.07Should I run ads on my own company name?

Usually yes, but keep it in its own campaign with a small budget. People searching your name are close to calling, and a competitor can bid on it. Keeping it separate stops cheap branded clicks from making the whole account look better than it is.

Q.08Why did my calls drop when my ad spend stayed the same?

Check the boring causes first: missed calls, a changed phone number, a form or tracking break, or a competitor entering the auction. We check search terms, impression share and call logs before touching bids.

Q.09Do you need my license and permit details?

Yes. We use your license status and the permits you pull in ad copy and on the landing page, because homeowners on larger jobs look for that.
