Google Ads for auto glass shops

Do not bid against a national chain on their best term.

We manage Google Ads for auto glass shops. The head term in auto glass is owned by a national advertiser with a larger budget and better Ad Rank than any local shop will assemble. Winning here means deliberately choosing the searches they are not optimized for.

Ceding the head term is a strategy, not a surrender.

Windshield replacement is the most expensive, most contested phrase in the trade, and the advertiser winning it has national scale behind every click. Insurance intent and calibration work sit beside it at a fraction of the cost, with a fraction of the competition, and they convert into higher-ticket jobs.

Three kinds of search, three kinds of budget

Auto glass demand does not arrive as one thing, and a single campaign cannot bid correctly for all of it.

Intent 01

The head term

Windshield replacement, auto glass near me. Dominated by national spend, priced accordingly, and the worst place for a local budget to sit.

Intent 02

Insurance and mobile

Is a windshield claim covered, zero deductible glass, mobile windshield replacement, same day at my house. Where a local operator genuinely beats a chain on both relevance and service.

Intent 03

ADAS calibration

Camera recalibration after a windshield replacement, lane assist warning after glass work. Technical, rising with every model year, high ticket, and a thin auction.

A local shop that concedes the head term and owns the other two ends up with a lower blended cost per job and better work. Fighting for the phrase with the biggest budget behind it is how a small account spends everything on the least profitable click.

The standing work, around the chain, not through it.

01

Insurance language, plainly stated

Deductible, direct billing, and which carriers you work with, on the page and in the ad. This is the intent a chain cannot personalise and the one a local shop wins on specificity.

02

Calibration as its own campaign

ADAS work rises with every model year and most competitors have not built for it. Separate campaign, separate landing page, separate and much better economics.

03

Mobile service in the geography, not just the copy

If you come to the driveway, the targeting and the ad text both have to say where. Mobile is the clearest advantage over a fixed-location chain and it is usually buried.

04

A control query before conceding anything

Our own DataForSEO pulls have reported zero paid results on auctions that were demonstrably live. Before concluding nobody is bidding on a term, run a control query. Acting on a false empty is how a budget walks into the head term by accident.

What drives the budget for an auto glass shop.

There is no single right number for glass. These are the things that move it, in the order they usually matter.

01

How contested your metro is

A market with a national chain and several regional installers bids up the head term fast. A smaller market lets insurance and calibration searches do more of the work. We look at who is actually in the auction before we suggest a spend.

02

Job value spread

A chip repair, a standard windshield, a camera-equipped windshield with calibration and a luxury or specialty pane are very different tickets. A budget that only buys the cheap job will look busy and earn little.

03

How many calls get answered

Glass customers call a few shops and book the first one that picks up. Missed calls are the biggest leak.

04

What you pay to learn

Early spend buys information about which searches book and which only ask for prices.

We price on booked work and we do not quote a universal number, because a shop with mobile vans and calibration equipment and a shop with one bay and no scanner are not the same account. Our pricing explains how the management side works.

How we structure the account.

Glass demand arrives as different jobs with different buyers. The account is split the same way, so each one gets its own bid, its own ad and its own page.

01

Separate campaigns by intent

Insurance claims, mobile replacement, calibration, repair and general replacement each get their own campaign.

02

Location settings that match your trucks

Mobile service is only worth advertising where you will drive. We set the radius and the cities around real service areas, and we exclude places you will not reach so you do not pay for calls you have to turn down.

03

Ad schedule and call handling together

We schedule ads around when someone can answer, and look hard at after-hours calls before paying for them.

Performance Max stays on a short leash. It can help once the search campaigns have proven which jobs book, but left alone it tends to chase cheap clicks, and in glass the cheap click is usually the repair quote shopper.

Negative keyword themes for auto glass.

Glass has its own kind of wasted click. These are the themes we block first, then refine from your actual search terms.

01

Do it yourself and supplies

Windshield repair kits, resin, how to fix a crack at home, and adhesive or tint film searches. These people are buying a bottle, not a job.

02

Parts, salvage and wrong vehicle

Used windshields, junkyard glass, wholesale glass, glass for equipment or boats you do not service.

03

Jobs and training

Auto glass technician jobs, apprenticeships, certification classes and franchise opportunities. These searches look like industry demand and are not.

The search terms report gets read every week.

Local Services Ads versus Search for auto glass.

They are different tools. The question for a glass shop is which jobs each one should be allowed to chase.

LSA often wins the quick replacement call. Search wins the claim and calibration jobs.

Where Local Services Ads is available for your category, it runs beside Search rather than instead of it, and we check availability first. LSA bidding works on lead-based goals and a budget Google explains here, and Google is moving LSA into Google Ads as Performance Max with pay-per-lead goals. Our Local Services Ads management page covers how we run it, and the auto glass marketing page shows how paid fits the rest.

How the work runs

  1. 01 Concede the head term Deliberately, with the budget moved rather than cut.
  2. 02 Own insurance intent Deductible, carriers and direct billing, said plainly.
  3. 03 Build calibration Its own campaign and its own page, while it is thin.
  4. 04 Verify the auction Control queries before trusting any empty SERP pull.

What we track and report.

Clicks are not the scoreboard. The scoreboard is booked windshields and calibrations.

01

Call tracking by source, with recording

Every call is tied to the campaign and search that produced it, and recorded so we can hear what callers ask for and how the phone is answered.

02

Qualified call, booked job, revenue

We separate real glass jobs from price shoppers, then match to booked jobs by type.

03

Search terms and impression share

We read the terms that spent money and see whether lost impressions came from budget or rank, because the fix for each is different.

04

LSA charged leads and credits

Where LSA runs, we review charged leads and request credits for ones Google allows credit for, such as invalid or duplicate leads.

Reviewed weekly, reported monthly in plain language.

How long until results.

Nobody honest can promise a date. Here is what has to happen before you can judge the account.

Stage 01

Gather and clean

The first stretch is data. We fix tracking, block waste, and see which searches and hours produce real calls.

Stage 02

Learn from booked jobs

Once booked work is flowing back into the account, bidding can favor the jobs that pay, not the ones that only ring the phone.

Stage 03

Judge on cost per booked job

This is the fair test. Early cost per click and cost per lead can look worse before they look better.

Insurance and calibration campaigns usually show their shape sooner than the head term would, because the auction is thinner. It is still month to month, so you can leave if it does not earn its keep.

What auto glass contractors ask

Q.01Why are we losing on windshield replacement?

Because a national advertiser with national scale is bidding on it and their Ad Rank reflects years of volume. It is not a settings problem. The useful response is to stop competing there and take the intent they are not built for.

Q.02Should we bid on the national chain brand name?

Rarely worth it. Brand terms convert poorly for competitors, cost more than they look like they should, and the click usually belongs to someone already booked. The money does better on insurance and calibration.

Q.03Is ADAS calibration worth its own campaign?

Yes, and increasingly so every model year. The searches are technical, the ticket is high, and the auction is thin because most shops have not built a page that speaks to it.

Q.04How do we show up for insurance-covered searches?

Say the specifics. Which carriers, how direct billing works, what happens to the deductible. Generic reassurance loses to specificity here, and specificity is exactly what a chain landing page will not carry.

Q.05Does mobile service change the geo strategy?

It should. Mobile is the strongest advantage a local shop has, and it needs to be in the targeting, the ad copy and the landing page rather than mentioned once on a services list.

Q.06What budget makes this viable against a chain?

Less than fighting them head on, because the terms are cheaper. The precondition is discipline: a budget that keeps drifting back to the head term will underperform at any size.

Q.07Why did my calls drop even though the ads are still running?

Usually one of a few things: a competitor raised bids, a budget capped out early in the day, a tracking or call forwarding problem, or a seasonal shift. We check the search terms, impression share and call logs in that order before touching bids.

Q.08Should I advertise windshield repair or only replacement?

Treat them separately. Repair searches are cheap, quick and often insurance-paid, while replacement and calibration carry the bigger ticket. Running both in one campaign hides which one is actually booking, so we split them and judge each on its own.

Q.09How do you handle customers who just want the cheapest quote?

We cannot stop price shoppers from calling, but we can reduce them. Ad copy leads with insurance help, mobile service and calibration instead of low price, and call recordings show whether your front desk turns quotes into booked jobs.
